Mathews is understood to have tended his resignation upon returning to Colombo after a shocking 3-2 series defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe in Sooriyawewa on Monday. At the conclusion of the series, it was evident that the result weighed heavily on the mind of the skipper.

“It’s one of the lowest points in my career. A hard pill to swallow. Everything went against us. From the toss to misreading the wicket. No excuses, because at the end of the day we were not good enough to beat them. They played better cricket.” Mathews had said regarding this.

Mathews who became Sri Lanka’s youngest Test captain in 2013 at the age of 25 led the nation in 34 Tests, winning 13 and losing 15 games. Since captaining his first ODI in 2012, Mathews has led the team in 47 wins and 45 losses in 98 games. In T20 internationals, Mathews has lead Sri Lanka to only 4 wins while being dealt 7 losses.

Injury plagued Mathews’ highlight as captain was Sri Lanka’s whitewash of Australia (3-0) in the home Test series last year.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath is tipped to be named skipper of the Test team while Upul Tharanga is expected to lead Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20Is.
