Ananda secure first innings win while Royal retain the L.D.H. Peiris memorial trophy

The first XI cricket encounter between Royal College Colombo and Ananda College which is traditionally played for the L.D.H. Peiris memorial shield ended yesterday at the Ananda College Grounds.

Royal winning the toss and electing to face the leather first put up a competitive 229 runs with contributions from three of their seniors who made good half centuries. Openers Hasitha Samarasinghe and Naveen Withanapathirana made 52 and 54 while Thiran Dhanapala made a noteworthy 51.

In reply Ananda College made 308-9 in 79.4 overs with a splendid century by Lakkana Jayasekara who made 124 which delighted most present be it Royal or Ananda support while Nisal Fransico chipped in with a well supported 42. Harith Samarasinghe stole the show for the bowlers picking up 6 for81

It wasn’t a pleasant day at the wickets for the Royalists this time though as their wickets fell at very regular intervals and at one stage was at a disastrous looking 99 runs for 8 wickets. It was a desperate 109 by Randev Pathirana and some gutty support by Lasith Embuldeniya at the tail that made Royal breathe a sigh of relief at the end of the day when the umpire called stumps. Dilanka Sandakan picked 3 of the 8 wickets for 37 runs while Supun Waragoda picked 2 for 24

The game ending in a tie, Royal College retained the traditional L.D.H. Peiris memorial trophy at Reid Avenue.
