The 96th Battle of the Maroons between Ananda College, Colombo and Nalanda College, Colombo commenced today (27th February) at SSC Grounds, Colombo.
After winning the toss, Ananda College skipper Kithma Withanapathirana had no hesitation in opting to bat first on what looked like a good surface for stroke play. The decision paid rich dividends as the Anandians piled up an imposing 325 for 5 at stumps on Day 1.
The chief architect of Ananda’s dominance was opening batter Nethula Edirimanne, who produced a magnificent unbeaten century on the big stage. Showing excellent temperament and patience, Edirimanne compiled a superb 150* off 254 deliveries, an innings studded with 14 fours and a six.
Edirimanne received valuable support from the middle order as Ovin Perera played a crucial hand to maintain the momentum. Perera contributed a well-compiled 53 off 79 balls, striking six boundaries, ensuring that Ananda capitalised on the solid start and pushed towards a commanding total.
For Nalanda College, Osanda Pamuditha was the most successful bowler on show. He finished with figures of 2 for 60, providing the much-needed breakthroughs for his side on a tough day in the field.
