Here’s a roundup of the Singer U19 Division I Cricket Tournament matches which took place today.

St Peter’s College vs St Thomas’ College

St Peter’s took first innings honours after an excting two days of cricket at Mount Lavinia. Day resumed with the visitors sitting comfortably at 109 for 4 on board with Santhush Gunathilake unbeaten on 73. Santhush came to this match needing 128 runs to reach 1000 runs for the season. He started the second day needing only 45 runs but he could only manage 12 runs before he was dismissed. Peterites collapsed for just 152 runs in their first innings losing the last six wickets for just 43 runs. Dellon Pieris bagged 7 wickets for the home side.

Thomians came into bat for their second innigs and showed intent right from the word go. Sithara Hapuinna was promoted up the order and the change worked out as he scored 46 runs. However, all eyes were on one Peterite who was just 6 wickets short before the match to become the first bowler to reach 100 wickets this season. It was none other than left arm orthodox bowler Miflal Ameen. His season tally stood at 94 and after a solitary wicket in the first innings he was 5 wickets short of the magical three figures. His moment of glory came on his 16th over when Pavith Rathnayake tried to slog sweep him but got caught at deep square leg. Miflal ended with figures of 5 for 63 and this was his 6th five wicket haul for the season. Thomians declared their innings at 169 for 9, giving St Peter’s a target of 163 runs.

Santhush got another chance to reach the milestone when he walked out to bat in the second innings. But he was dismissed in the 2nd over for duck by Pavith Rathnayake. Peterites were given no free-bees in the run chase by the two left armers of St Thomas’ College. Anishka Perera and Vinul Goonawardane hung on the crease for some time but both fell just minutes away from stumps. Vice-Captain Manelka De Silva came out at No 4 and had a real crack at the Thomian bowlers. He was unbeaten on 36 at stumps and the Peterite total stood at 86 for 3 in 26 overs.

Royal College vs Sri Dharmaloka College

Royal College must find answers for their batting woes as they got bowled out 128 runs in their match against Sri Dharmaloka College. Royal won the toss elected to bat first. They struggled from the word go as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. The only resistance came from Ronuka Jayawardane and Abishek Perera who scored valuable cameos for the home side. Yugesha Dishan was the pick of the bowlers for Dharmaloka with 4 wickets while Madhumadhawa Anuruddha and Venura Gayesha shared 2 wickets each.

In reply, Dharmaloka were 116 for 6 at stumps with Madhuamadhawa Anuruddha scoring 58 and Samitha Ranaga scoring an unbeaten 29.

Trinity College vs Zahira College

Hasitha Boyagoda and Hasintha Jayasuriya slammed centuries as Trinity took first innings honours in their match against Zahira College at the Pallekale International Stadium. Zahira resumed play with 65 for 4 after Trinity College posted 252 for their first innings. Mohommad Shamaz looked apart from the rest of the Zahira batsmen as they got bundled out for 123, leaving Shamaz unbeaten on 41. Hasitha Boyagoda and Vimukthi Nethumal bagged 3 wickets each for Trinity College.

Trinity came out to bat for their second innings and they piled up 394 runs in 79 overs. Hasitha Boyagoda and Hasintha Jayasooriya slammed centuries while Shanmuganathan Shanogeeth scored a quick fire 60. Zahira had absolutely no control of the run flow as the upcountry boys dominated the final two sessions.
