The visitors once again won the toss and elected to bat first looking fairly comfortable early on at 67/1. Nisala Tharaka and Sri Lanka fast bowler Lahiru Gamage bowled impressive spells in the searing heat in Hambantota picking up two wickets apiece to put Sri Lanka Emerging well in control of proceedings.

The fast bowling duo of Tharaka and Gamage got brilliant support from the former Sri Lanka under 19 skipper Kamindu Mendis who went on to capture four wickets.

The ambidextrous Mendis made crucial breakthroughs in the middle and lower order as the Proteas Emerging batsmen struggled to counter his bowling styles with both arms.

Ryan Rickelton seemed to be the only batsman who was able to cope with the Sri Lankan bowling to a certain extent, as he made a fluent half century at the top of the order.

Nande Burger(31) and Gregory Mahlokwana(29) made useful contributions but were dismissed at crucial stages of the innings, as South Africa Emerging were restricted to 216 all-out on a surface which looked pretty good for batting.

The visitors though hit back late in the day through the wickets of Test caps Kaushal Silva and Sadeera Samarawickrama, who made 34 and 25 respectively.

Lahiru Milantha was the other man dismissed as the hosts ended day 1 on 69/3, trailing the South Africa Emerging Team by a further 147 runs.
