Amanthi Silva shatters 19-year-old record

Promising athlete Amanthi Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo shattered the 19 year old discus throw record as a total of 12 new meet records were set at the end of third day of the Western Province School Games’ athletics championship continued at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Amanthi threw 38.75m in the girls Under 21 category to erase the previous record set by Lakshi Karawita of C.W.W.Kannagara Vidyalaya in 1995.

Harsha Chathuranga of St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya coming back from an injury returned 48.5 seconds performance in the 400m under 19 boy’s event, which erased the record set by national athlete Ranga Wimalawansha of his own College in 1998 and equaled by Lahiru Prasanjith of Taxila CC Horana two years ago.

Amesh Ravintha Perera of Maris Stella College Negambo jumped 14.24m in the triple jump for boys Under 17, which erased the previous record set by Sagara Fernando of same college in 1998. Maleesha Perera of Nalanda College clocked 21.9 second to erase 200m boys Under 19 records of 22.0 seconds set by Joy Danushka Perera in 2001, equaled by S.R.Makalanda in 2005 and Roshan Chamara Silva in 2008. Vidusha Lakshani, who set a new meet record in the Under 19 girls’ triple jump saw her Under 17 girls record of the same event shattered today as M.S.Upeksha of D.S.Senanayake Central College Minuwangoda jumped 11.89 m to set a new meet record.

Avindra Silva of Ananda College jumped 6.83 m in the long jump boys Under 17 to erase the record set by Duminda Prasad of Veyangoda Central College Gampaha (6.76). Vidusha Lakshani anchored Newstead Girls College to improve 4X100m girls Under 19 record (50.0 seconds), which erased the previous record set by the same school team last year (52.5 seconds). The championship will conclude today under the patronage of Chief Minister, Western Province, Prasanna Ranatunga . The championship saw 5820 athletes in action from 708 schools from the 11 education zones of Western Province.
