A new twist to the game of Golf – Inter School Golf championship

The media briefing of the ‘Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) Inter-School Golf Championship’ to be held on Saturday the 22nd of June 2013 at the RCGC, organized for the first time in Sri Lanka by ‘DONS GOLF’ in association with the RCGC took place at Royal Colombo Golf Club premises.

 

Addressing the press were the Project Chairman, Mr. Tyronne Weerackody, Captain of the Royal Colombo Golf Club Mr. Priath Fernando, President of ‘DONS GOLF’ Mr. Malik Ahamadeen , and  the tournament director Mr. Mihindu Chandrasoma

Welcoming the gathering Mr. Malik Ahamadeen firstly explained the term ‘DONS’ which represents this event, which is organized by old boys of D.S. Senanayake College. “A herculean effort went into organizing the inaugural RCGC Inter School  Golf Championship for the year 2013 in a very short period of less than a month, and I believe this will be the most looked forward event in the Golfing calendar in the future as well” added the President of ‘DONS GOLF’.

Next up Mr. Tyronne Weerackody briefed how the organizers wish to create an event with a difference with typical Sri Lankan ‘Big match’ style atmosphere and ambiance with live bands and other entertainment throughout the day amidst the  tournament.  He further mentioned it will also be a massive platform for awareness and networking, in order to understand as to how Golf can be more affordable and be taken to a school level where students can be trained and compete. Wrapping up the project chairmen finally said “We believe this initiative will create interest and kick start Golf as a sport to be part of the school sports offering to the students”

As the name tag stands the tournament organizers DONS GOLF are a group of Golf enthusiasts who are the old boys of D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo. What started as a friendly 4-ball has now grown to a players club of more than 20 avid golfers. The key focus of the event is to kick start a much needed Inter school tournament that has always had a significant demand.

The tournament will represent 230 golfers representing 24 schools, including 5 girls schools, from all over the country that will compete for the coveted ‘RCGC inter-school Golf Championship challenge trophy awarded by ‘DONS Golf’’. The Tournament format will be a 5-ball Stableford with 2 shotgun starts in the morning and afternoon.

Among the 40 or so golfing awards on offer, there are additional Golf tours, Drivers, Putters, Gift vouchers, Hotel vouchers and a ‘Goody Bag’ for each participant worth over Rs 20,000/-. This is undoubtedly the largest array of prizes and gifts on offer at a single event that the RCGC has ever seen to date.

Last but not least Mr. Mihindu Chandrasoma the tournament director pointed out the CSR aspect of the event “Apart from the fantastic golfing response and probably being the most lucrative social event year at  the RCGC we have been very fortunate to also incorporate a CSR project with the magnanimous support received from E-wis Peripherals Ltd., donating a child incubator worth Rs 650,000 to our neighbour ‘Castle Maternity Hospital’ which makes this event even more wholesome”
