The annual Schools Regatta conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rowing Association (SLSRA) is set to kick off for the third consecutive year at the Colombo Rowing Club from the 23rd to the 27th of this month.
An event that looks to establish itself as a showpiece event at the end of the rowing season, the event will feature competitors from 18 different schools, six more than last year. While it is an opportunity for newcomers to the rowing community to compete and develop, with many traditional and prestigious inter school regattas coming up there will be many eyes on the heavyweights of the schools rowing arena as they fine tune their crews for these encounters.
The event will be worked off over five age categories, with overall championships up for grab in four age groups. The Under 13 and Under 14 age groups will feature single sculls and double sculls races, while the under 16, 18 and 20 age groups will compete in single sculls, double sculls, pairs and fours events.
Six schools will be taking part in this regatta for the first time this year and it will be interesting to see if any of Gateway International School, St. Peter’s College, Defence Services School, Stafford International School, Mahanama College or Sirimavo Banadaranaike Girls’ School are capable of creating any waves on their debut appearance. They will have to put up an exceptional performance to do so if the regular rowing heavyweights perform up to the standards expected from them. Royal College, Ananda College, S. Thomas’ College, Ladies’ College, Musaeus College and Bishop’s College are the schools expected to put on a strong showing at the regatta, while the likes of Asian International School, St. Josephs’s College, Visakha Vidyalaya and others are capable of giving them stiff competition.
The events will be worked off from the 23rd to the 27th of September with the final events set to take place on the last day of races.
