The Sri Lanka team left the country early morning in order to participate the 91st Malaysian open Athletics Championship, which will be held at Kangar main stadium, Perlis, Malaysia from 25th to 27th this month.
The team includes Ranabima warrior Supun Randeniya, who will be competing at his favourite 110m hurdle event along with National 400m champion sailor Chanaka Jayasekara, Long Jumper Amila Jayasiri and High Jumper Thilina Karunarathne along with the Manager and Coach.
Randeniya was asked several questions from the officials when he was ignored from both Thai and Macau Open Championship early this year after clocking impressive 14.15 seconds in the event, which is the fastest time by a Sri Lankan for years.
After his new meet record in the South Asian Junior Championship (13.64 seconds), Asian Junior Bronze medal in 2012 and World Junior participant in the same year Randeniya emerged as the future star of Sri Lankan athletes but was continuously kept sidelined early this year from international championships .
He finally got his chance after his personal best performance bit of arrogance behaviour after his record breaking performance at the junior nationals where Athletics Association announced four members team for the Malaysian Open Athletics Championship based on Junior National’s performances.
“Randeniya was out of training for a few days due to small cramp but he is back in the track now and been training well in the last couple of days. He is a boy with great guts and always looking for personal best, “said Coach Lakshman Hapuarachchi
Chanaka Jayasekara, who set new meet record in the Junior National in 200m and later emerged National Champion of 400m week after will compete in the both 200m and 400m events. Amila Jayasiri who emerged best athlete at the Junior National Championship with impressive7.64m jump will compete in the long jump, while Thilina Karunarathne who has best of 2:16m jump will certainly try to improve his performance.
Randeniya’s coach Lakshman Hapuarachchi will be the coach of the team, while group captain K.G. Hemachandra of the Air Force will be the manager.
