World top ranked and commonwealth games gold medalist javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga etched national athletics history books once more by clinching another gold medal at the Lausanne (Switzerland) Leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League after a thrilling contest with his Indian arch-rival Neeraj Chopra.

The contest in Lausanne intensified as the champion from Sri Lanka displayed a slight decline with his performance compared to his recent outings. A gold (2020) and silver (2024) medalist of the Olympics, Neeraj Chopra, gave a toe-to-toe fight by dragging the event down to the wire. Rumesh started the event with a moderate throw of 85.99 meters, while Chopra only could cover a distance of 83.54 meters by placing Rumesh on the driving seat after the first attempt. During the second round, Rumesh improved his distance with a fine throw of 87.09 meters, Rumesh improved his distance with a fine throw of 87.09 meters by lifting the hopes of the nation. But the reply from the Indian was explosive, and with a brilliant throw of 88.05 meters, Chopra placed himself in the top position on the table. This marked the seasonal best performance for the Indian by outclassing his previous seasonal best of 85.83 meters, which earned him the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

But the lion from Sri Lanka never retreated and unleashed all of his power during his third attempt by clearing a distance of 88.14 meters. With his massive throw, Rumesh Tharanga regained the lead at the end of the first three rounds, finishing just 9 centimeters ahead of Chopra. During the latter throws, both Rumesh and Neeraj failed to improve their distance. Hence, Rumesh clinched the gold by giving a rare honor to the motherland, while the fellow thrower from India had to settle with another silver after giving a tough fight. Meanwhile, the Grenadian javelin thrower who won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics (2024) cleared a distance of 86.69 meters during his sixth and final attempt by clinching the bronze medal during the Lausanne leg.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games (2026) gold medallist Rumesh Tharanga started this season by clinching a silver medal at the Rabat Diamond League (Morocco) with a throw of 85.97 meters. During the Diamond League in Roma, Italy, Rumesh clinched the gold with a massive throw of 92.62 meters and went to the history books as the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a gold medal at the Diamond League. Still, this throw stands as the Sri Lankan National Record in the event. Rumesh defended his gold medal at the Doha leg of Diamond League with a throw of 88.68 meters before he sealed the Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal by ending Sri Lanka’s 20-year drought for a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

The next hurdle for the champion will be the Zurich (Weltklasse Zürich) Leg on 27th August. Then the athletes will be heading to the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final which will take place on September 04 – 05, 2026, at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme inside the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.
