The classic rivalry in Panadura was continued for another thrilling edition as Royal College, Panadura, battled against St. John’s College, Panadura, in the 27th Haritha Maha Satana. Played at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium, Moratuwa, the much-anticipated two-day encounter ultimately ended in a tame draw, but it was St. John’s College who walked away with the ultimate honors, securing a crucial first innings win thanks to a masterclass innings from Bhanuka Adithya.
Resuming the second and final day on an overnight score of 234 for 2, St. John’s College continued their absolute dominance. The overnight pair of Adithya (132*) and vice-captain Tharul Laksanda (67*) took an aggressive approach right from the first session, looking to pile on quick runs and force an early declaration.
As the mammoth partnership cruised towards the double-hundred mark, Royal College’s skipper decided to take the new ball in a bid to extract some swing and life from the pitch. The tactical shift paid off when right-arm pace bowler Chalana Dineth Perera provided the vital breakthrough. In an attempt to accelerate the scoring further, Laksanda was caught off Perera’s bowling for a well-compiled 85, an innings decorated with 15 boundaries and a solitary six.
Despite the wicket, the Johnians kept their foot on the gas. Skipper Madusha Mendis joined the set Adithya at the crease, and the duo quickly added a 50-plus partnership before the declaration finally came from the dugout. Adithya, the undisputed hero of the encounter, remained unbeaten on a scintillating 167, comprising 21 elegant boundaries and two massive sixes. Mendis provided the perfect finishing touch, remaining not out on a fiery 35. For Royal College, deputy skipper Chalana Dineth Perera and Yesara Nithil were the only bowlers to taste success, sharing the three wickets to fall.
Chasing a mammoth total with only a couple of sessions and a few overs remaining in the game, Royal College was backed into a corner, with survival being their only realistic target. However, St. John’s bowlers had other ideas. Kusal Fernando and Sanithu Yunath dismantled the top order in no time, reducing the Royalists to a perilous 29 for 3.
Amidst the ruins, Yesara Nithil and Sathsara Nilanjith staged a fightback. The duo absorbed the pressure and built a steady, albeit slow, 78-run partnership to restore some respectability to the Royal innings. However, just as things were looking stable, a dramatic collapse saw the Royalists slump from 106 for 3 to 158 for 9.
With St. John’s sensing an outright victory, the last pair of Sanvidu Silva and Enuka Anudath displayed remarkable grit and fighting spirit. Defying the Johnian attack, the duo forged an unbroken 48-run partnership to save the game and force a draw. Nithil, who had been the only successful bowler for Royal on Day 1, showcased his all-round capabilities by scoring a gritty half-century. Nilanjith and Savindu de Silva also chipped in with valuable contributions of 43 and 40 runs, respectively. For St. John’s, Ashen Sanuka was the chief destroyer, ripping through the middle order to finish with four wickets, while Sanithu Yunath was rewarded for his early breakthroughs with three valuable scalps.
Intermittent bad light and drizzle throughout the day further hindered any chance of a definitive result, ultimately sealing the fate of the match as a draw. Nevertheless, the 27th Haritha Maha Satana belonged to St. John’s College, who claimed first-innings honors on the back of Adithya’s commanding batting and a disciplined bowling performance.
While the two-day affair has concluded, the rivalry is far from over. The two arch-rivals will lock horns again tomorrow (Sunday) for their annual limited-overs encounter. St. John’s College will undoubtedly take the field brimming with confidence, riding high on their superlative batting display and tight bowling. However, Royal College, Panadura will be eager to leave the disappointment of the two-day game behind and put up a vastly improved performance to topple their rivals in a format where a definitive result is guaranteed.
