92nd Battle of the Saints - Day 2

The 92nd Battle of the Saints remains on a knife-edge, but St. Joseph’s College walked off the SSC Grounds with their chests out after a dramatic late-day collapse left St. Peter’s College reeling at 248 for 7 at stumps. Despite a masterful middle-order recovery, the Peterites now trail by 104 runs with only three wickets in hand, leaving the Josephians as favourites for a significant first-innings lead.

Resuming the day at 281 for 5, St. Joseph’s initially struggled for momentum, with a lack of intent threatening to stall their progress and take valuable time out of the match. However, Chethina Kavinda provided the necessary spark, upping the ante with a vital unbeaten 39 to push the total past the 350-run mark.

The Josephians eventually declared at 352 for 8, but not before Shavidu Silva etched his name into the history books. Silva’s disciplined toil earned him figures of 5 for 95, making him the first Peterite since 2016 to claim a five-wicket haul in the Joe-Pete encounter.

The Peterite reply started disastrously. Savi Fernando was removed just before the lunch break, and when his opening partner, Dineth De Silva, fell shortly after the restart, the Bambalapitiya side was reeling at 19 for 2.

What followed was a clinic in positive batting. Asadisa De Silva (78) and Shavidu Silva (62) combined for a mammoth third-wicket stand that shifted the pressure back onto the Josephian spinners. Their exemplary footwork against the turning ball anchored the innings, taking the score to 149 before Asadisa was softly dismissed. Jason Fernando then joined Shavidu to maintain the scoring rate, with his aggressive 67 guiding the Peterites past the 200-run mark.

With the score at a comfortable 226 for 3, St. Peter’s seemed poised to overhaul the Josephian total. However, the final session saw a catastrophic shift in momentum, as the Peterite middle order crumbled, losing four wickets for just 22 runs in a frantic passage of play.

The Joes’ spin attack, led by Vigneshwaran Akash (3 for 39), exploited the late-day wear on the pitch. The ultimate blow came on the very last ball of the day when Jason Fernando was trapped LBW by Akash for 67, leaving the Peterites in a tricky position heading into the final day.

While the Peterites showed great heart in the middle sessions, the late collapse has handed the initiative back to the Josephians. A slow opening session from the Joes earlier in the day might have hampered the chances of a result, but they now sit firmly in the driver’s seat for first-innings honours.
