The 76th Battle of the Golds between St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa concluded today (08th March) at the Tyronne Fernando Cricket Stadium in Moratuwa, with St. Sebastian’s producing a strong second innings effort before the match ended in a draw. 

Trailing by 49 runs on the first innings, St. Sebastian’s began the final day looking to build a strong lead and put the Cambrians under pressure. 

Thivanka Fernando set the tone at the top of the order with a steady 50, while Kaveesha Perera anchored the innings with a patient 52. Lashen Fernando then accelerated the scoring with a fluent 54, helping the Sebastians move into a commanding position. 

The momentum continued through the latter stages of the innings as Koshendra Fernando produced an impressive unbeaten 66, while Chamath Wellalage added a valuable 50 not out. Their partnership ensured the Sebastians stretched the lead significantly before declaring. 

St. Sebastian’s eventually declared on 279 for 4 in 71 overs, setting Prince of Wales a challenging target late in the day. 

Prince of Wales struggled to gain momentum in their reply as the Sebastians struck at regular intervals. Palingu Perera top scored with 22, while Oshan De Silva remained unbeaten on 17. 

However, wickets continued to fall around them as Wijethunga, Fernando,  Cooray and Gawesha Fernando were dismissed in quick succession. 

Koshendra Fernando and Malintha Silva led the bowling effort for the Sebastians, claiming two wickets each as the Cambrians lost wickets at regular intervals. 

At the close of play, Prince of Wales were 54 for 5 in 28 overs, with the match ending in a draw while the Cambrians secured first innings honours in the 76th edition of the historic Moratuwa encounter.
