6th Annual Royal-Thomian Sailing Regatta will be held on the 5th and 6th of July 2019 at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club (Bolgoda) Idibedda Moratuwa. 

There will be two racing categories at the Regatta, the Optimist Class and Laser Class competed in both team and individual racing formats. 5 individual races and 3 team races will be sailed overall.

The lowest aggregate positions in both the individual and team events will thereby contribute towards the end result for the overall trophy. 2 points each will be awarded to the A team of the Laser and Optimist categories, while 1 point will go towards the B teams. Individual winners will also receive 2 points in each category.

Age range is between 9-16 for the optimist class category while the 16 and above aged sail the laser category.

S.Thomas’ College (STC) sailing team for 2019 will be captained for the 2nd consecutive year by 4th year coloursman Kethaka Weerasooriya who will lead the Laser Class whilst Royal College (RC) is captained by a 2nd year coloursman, Nisal Walpola. 

The optimist category will be led by Shashenka Fernando for S. Thomas’ while Sahanya Wevita is set to lead the Royalists. STC is coached by Nadine de Rosayro while Radheeka Jirasinghe coached the Royal crew this year.

Both Royal College and S.Thomas’ College have produced sailors who have represented Sri Lanka at the Olympics and other International levels in the past. Ranil Dias, an Old Boy of S. Thomas’ College along with Lalin Jirasinghe, an Old Boy of both Royal and S. Thomas’ represented Sri Lanka in the 470 Class at the 1984 Olympic games in the USA. 

They also went on to represent Sri Lanka in the Asian Games and other open race events overseas. Ray Wijewardena, a former Thomian too represented Sri Lanka in the Olympics in the Finn Class in the 1972 games in Mexico and in the Asian Games as well. 

Asita Tennakoon and Anil Gunawardena represented Sri Lanka in the GP World Chamiponship, Rehan Dias in the Laser and Optimist Classes and Akshan Jirasinghe in the Optimist Class to name a few.

The Thomians lead the overall tally by 4 winnings to 1 while the Ranil Dias Memorial Trophy, introduced in 2017 to the overall winner, has a tally of 1 – 1. This year’s event has the backing of Ceylinco Life Insurance, who will join as sponsors for the year.
