Richmond College edged out Mahinda College in a thrilling finish to their 38th Limited Overs encounter for the Woodward-Small Shield, played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

In what turned out to be a closely contested battle, Richmond held their nerve in the final stages to secure a narrow 3-wicket victory after chasing down Mahinda’s competitive total.

Batting first, Mahinda College posted 229 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to a collective batting effort rather than a single dominant performance.

Sehas Walpita top-scored with a well-made 46, while Kaveesha Githmal provided late impetus with an unbeaten 41. Contributions from Manitha Rajapakshe (29), Gesandu Bisas (26), and Dulsith Darshana (24) ensured Mahinda reached a challenging total.

For Richmond College, Ameesha Rasanjana and Nethuja Basitha were the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets apiece and keeping the Mahinda batting lineup in check.

In reply, Richmond College produced a composed batting performance, chasing down the target with 230 for 7 in their 50 overs.

Ameesha Rasanjana played a crucial role with an unbeaten 68, anchoring the chase with maturity, while Risinu Rupainghe contributed 46 at the top of the order. Punal Hansajith also added a valuable 42 to keep the scoreboard moving.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Richmond managed to stay on course, with lower-order contributions proving decisive in the closing stages.

Mahinda’s bowling effort was led by Manitha Rajapakshe, who picked up 2 wickets, but they were unable to prevent Richmond from crossing the line in a tense finish.

In the end, Richmond College emerged victorious in a tightly fought encounter, capping off an entertaining edition of the historic Woodward-Small Shield.
