The Royal College Sailing Club and S. Thomas’ College Sailing club in collaboration with the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka, is to hold the 2nd Royal-Thomian Sailing Regatta, at the Ceylon Motor and Yacht Club, Lower Indibedda, Moratuwa on Saturday the 10th of October from 10 am onwards.

The event, which was held for the very first time last year, was put in place to foster further the healthy rivalry between two of Sri Lanka’s most prominent schools and also put the spotlight one of the more lesser known sporting arenas in the country.

The Regatta will feature both individual and team races this year, where each school will put forward an A and B team. Furthermore, an Exhibition race is also scheduled to take place.

10947-1Past National Sailing Champion Romesh Illangakoon will grace the occasion as chief guest, while Mr. Upali Gunasekara, Principal Royal College & Reverend Father Marc Billimoria, Warden of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia are expected to be present at the event.

At the inaugural Sailing Regatta held last year, students sailed on “The Optimist”: a small, single handed sailing dinghy, which is recognized as an international class boat by the International Sailing Federation. The Thomian crew emerged victorious of the inaugural event, as they sailed their way through the course set for them at the Ceylon Motor and Yacht Club in Indibedda, Moratuwa. Having been beaten by the Thomians last year, the Royal crew will no doubt be out for some revenge as they set sail this weekend.

As the two schools prepare to race each other this weekend, the organizers of the event have made the regatta open to the public and welcome Old Boys, well-wishers and followers of the sport to come witness a sailing event they will not soon forget.
