The minnows of world cricket record their first ever test win.

They were a talented and well determined group of cricketers, but 13 winless test matches, kept them in a strenuous wait for three years. The day finally arrived when they took India in the second test match at P. Sara Stadium which was played on 6th, 7th, 8th , 10th and 11th of September 1985. 

The home team was led by Duleep Mendis while the Indians were captained by Kapil Dev. Amal Silva was adjudged man of the match for his century in the first innings as well as for the heroics behind stumps. Rumesh Ratnayake took 9 wickets ensuring a comprehensive win by 149 runs.

India 1st innings – 244 all out (Kris Srikkanth 64, Mohinder Amarnath 60: Rumesh Ratnayake 4 for 76, Saliya Ahangama 3 for 59)

Sri Lanka 2nd innings – 206/3 dec. (Aravinda de Silva 75, Roy Dias 60*: Ravi Shastri 1 for 41)

India 2nd innings – 198 all out (Kapil Dev 78: Rumesh Ratnayake 5 for 49, Ashantha de Mel 3 for 64)

Result – Sri Lanka won by 149 runs.
