In a thrilling limited-over encounter that lived up to its billing, St. John’s College, Panadura pulled off a sensational 12-run victory over St. Royal College, Panadura at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium. The match, defined by fluctuating momentum and a nail-biting finish, was ultimately decided by a brilliant bowling spell from Sanithu Yunath, whose four-wicket haul shattered the Royalists’ chase in the dying overs.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first on a surface that appeared favorable for the batters, St. John’s College got off to a flying start. Openers Chenuka Rehan and Banuka Adhithya took the attack to the Royalist bowlers, particularly to Enuka Anudath, the right-arm fast bowler who opened the bowling for Royal. The duo constructed a solid half-century partnership, punishing loose deliveries and racing to 61 runs without loss.

However, the game’s first turning point arrived amidst a total misunderstanding between the set batsmen. Chenuka Rehan, who was cruising on a fluent 42 off just 36 balls, laced with four boundaries and three towering sixes, was unfortunately run out with the score at 61. Following the setback, Banuka Adhithya attempted to anchor the innings but eventually departed for 29 runs. His wicket triggered a dramatic collapse as the Johnians lost their way. Contributions from Sadew Pabasara and Asen Shanuka offered brief resistance, but the disciplined bowling and tight fielding of the Royalists suffocated the batting lineup. St. John’s collapsed from a comfortable 95/2 to 98/5, and later from 133/6 to 144 all out.

The resurgence of the Royal College bowling attack was led by Sathsara Nilanjith, who exploited the early opening to claim 3 wickets. He was well-supported by right-arm pace bowler Yesara Nithil and skipper Sadew Wijerathna, with both chipping in with a couple of wickets apiece to restrict their arch-rivals to a seemingly manageable total.

Defending an under-par score, the Johnians took to the field with intent. Their strategy to apply early pressure paid immediate dividends when opener Dinimuthu Perera was run out for a duck, leaving Royal at 0/1. Then Royalists fought back through a crucial partnership between Yesara Nithil and Sathsarana Matheesha. Nithil played a cameo of 27 runs, featuring three fours and a maximum, while Matheesha played the cautious anchor. The pair escalated the score to 47/1 before Nithil perished attempting an expensive shot. Disaster struck for Royal immediately after, as Matheesha was also run out with the score unchanged, leaving the team in trouble at 47/3.

Then Udara Dhananjaya then joined deputy skipper Chalana Dineth Perera, and the duo launched a counter-attack. Their 22-run partnership was vital in the context of this low-scoring game. Once Udara Dhananjaya fell, the onus was entirely on the vice-captain. Chalana Dineth Perera played a remarkable innings, stitching together small but vital partnerships with the middle order. His 39-run stand with Thisaja Kumarathunga tilted the game heavily in Royal’s favor. At 120/6, with only 25 runs required and four wickets in hand, the Royalists seemed destined for victory, with the finish line looking like a walk in the park.

However, the Johnians had other plans and Sanithu Yunath took the business into his hands. With the game slipping away, Yunath rose to the occasion, delivering a masterclass in death bowling. He picked up the set batsmen after the addition of just five more runs, swinging the momentum back to St. John’s. Once the resistance was broken, the floodgates opened. The tailenders, crumbling under the immense pressure, succumbed to consecutive ducks. Royal College, Panadura, were bowled out for just 132 runs in 34.2 overs.

It was a fierce bowling display and a superb effort in the field that allowed St. John’s College to defend their total, securing a thrilling 12-run victory. Despite the low score, the encounter provided ample entertainment, justifying the turnout of students and fans from both schools who packed the Tyronne Fernando Stadium to witness a classic finish.
