Expat Olympian hurdler Christina Sonali Merrill dashed Sri Lankan hopes once again with a mediocre 58.65 seconds performance to finish sixth in the 400m hurdles heat at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday.
Meanwhile shuttler Achini Rathnasiri start her campaign on a winning note as she beat A. Rasheed of Maldives (2-0) in the women’s single round of 64. Rathnsiri beat Rasheed easily in straight round 21-11 and 21-12 to advance forward.
In addition Olympian Anuruddha Rathnayake was beaten by A. Omar of Ghana in the quarter finals of the men’s fly weight 62kg match which ended his road in the Commonwealth Games. Meanwhile Sri Lankan born Ruwan Gunasinghe who represented Papua New Guinea was placed 7th in the men’s 100m heat with a time of 11.03 seconds.
