At the picturesque Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds in Colombo 07, the 20th Battle of the Golds between D.S. Senanayake College and Mahanama College produced a thrilling day of school cricket. The second day’s play belonged firmly to Mahanama College, who first bundled the Dons out for 344 before launching a blistering unbeaten 161-run opening stand to completely shift the momentum of the contest.
Resuming the morning session on an overnight score of 195 for 4, the D.S. camp harboured hopes of steadily grinding their first innings towards a monumental total. However, Mahanama had other plans. National youth-capped spinner Chamika Heenatigala, bringing all his experience and sharp skills to the fore, struck a crucial early blow by dismissing Haamid Afdhal for just 10 runs.

The very next over saw the introduction of Venura Kaveethra, who compounded D.S.’s misery by stumping the well-set Shevan Welgama. These early morning breakthroughs brought Mahanama roaring back into the contest, effectively neutralising the back-foot position they had been forced into by Miyuru Bandara’s magnificent century on day one. Reflecting on the overall trajectory of the D.S. innings, the collapse from a commanding 170 for 2 to a precarious 217 for 6 proved to be a major turning point.
Just when it seemed Mahanama’s bowlers would run through the tail, D.S. skipper Randisha Bandaranayake and all-rounder Shanal Binuksha staged a vital rescue act. The duo stitched together a gritty 43-run partnership, disrupting the rhythm of the Mahanama bowlers, who had been right on song. However, the resistance proved short-lived as Binuksha departed caught behind, handing pacer Sithum Vihanga his first-ever wicket in a big match encounter.
In walked another capable all-rounder, Chanul Athale, who immediately shifted gears. While skipper Bandaranayake anchored the innings from one end with calculated precision, Athale played aggressive and fearless cricket, launching a massive six that echoed around the SSC grounds. The pair put together a glorious 70-run stand for the eighth wicket, pushing the game away from Mahanama’s grasp and steering D.S. towards a respectable total.
Heartbreak, however, awaited the D.S. skipper. Having timed the ball beautifully throughout his innings, Bandaranayake unfortunately miscued a shot just as a well-deserved half-century beckoned, departing for a classy 48 runs. Following his dismissal, the D.S. innings wrapped up quickly at a well-made 344. The day undoubtedly belonged to Chamika Heenatigala, whose spin wizardry earned him outstanding figures of six wickets as he dismantled the D.S. batting lineup.
Chasing a formidable total, Mahanama’s response was nothing short of spectacular. Openers and skipper Dulnith Sigera and Sineth Veerarathne walked out to the middle with a clear plan as they faced the new ball from D.S. paceman Oshadha Perera. The pair displayed immense maturity, refusing to flirt with the early swing and instead focusing on building a rock-solid foundation.
As the innings progressed, the duo began to cut loose. On a batting-friendly SSC track, Sigera and Veerarathne were superb in their shot selection, sending the ball to all corners of the ground with pristine timing. D.S. tried every trick in the book, making numerous bowling changes in a desperate attempt to break the deadlock, but the openers made run-scoring look effortless.
By the time the umpires called stumps on day two, both batsmen had reached commanding half-centuries, cementing an unbroken 161-run partnership for the first wicket. Left-hander Sineth Veerarathne looked dangerously fluent, remaining unbeaten on 83 and eyeing a century, while skipper Dulnith Sigera provided flawless support with an unbeaten 72.
As the 20th Battle of the Golds heads into its final day, Mahanama appear to hold all the aces. However, the reality of the imposing 344-run first innings total posted by D.S. Senanayake College still looms large. With only 183 runs separating the two sides and plenty of wickets in hand, the game is heavily trending towards another customary big-match draw unless some unforeseen magic unfolds at the SSC Grounds during the morning session of the final day.
