The final clash of the School’s hockey calendar is prepping to take center stage on 11th November at the Astro Hockey Turf, Colombo. The evening will kick off with the U15 match followed by the Old boys match which leads to the main event – the U19 battle.

The Orville Abeynaike Trophy was introduced on a proposal made by the Warden of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia and accepted by the principal of Royal College of playing an annual hockey encounter.

The Orville Abeynaike Trophy was donated by the family of the late Mr. Orville Abeynaike. He was an old Thomian and had the distinction of playing cricket for S. Thomas’ in 1941, 1942 and 1943. He rejoined the staff of S. Thomas’ in 1959 and served his alma mater faithfully until 1981. He was also the sub warden of S. Thomas’ college as well as the coach and master in charge of cricket and hockey which spanned almost two decades and produced some of the most exceptional sportsmen in that era.

Although the encounter between the two schools’ dates to the 1960s the official encounter for the Orville Abeynaike trophy was introduced in the year 2000 and the series have produced some outstanding games and have been dominated by the Thomians; Until seven years later when Royal made, what seems like, a permanent come back. Since then Disce aut Discede has taken upon themselves to secure its home with them for the next decade.

ThePapare.com visited the two institutions and both were highly confident in stealing the trophy in the last big encounter for the 2017 tournament lineup. Royal College will be looking to retain the trophy and enter its second decade at Reid Avenue as S. Thomas’ will fight to bring it back to its roots and break the Royal winning streak.

With the introduction, it has generated much interest and raised the standard of the game in both schools. Results of the matches played in the series so far are as follow.
