Fourteen year old Prashan Peiris was the cynosure of all eyes at the Inaugural BBDO Monthly Medal golf championship held at the Royal Colombo Golf Course when he was named the winner in the Handicap 0-9 Division last Saturday.

Some 200 members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) battled it out in what was the first ever digitised golf tournament in the 130 year history of the RCGC complete with online registration, navigational maps and multimedia guides including training videos to sharpen the player’s game.

Peiris emerged the winner in the Division A (Handicap 0-9) Nett and Gross categories with a Nett score of 65 and a Gross score of 73. The RCGC has a par of 71 and a CSS score of 71.

A student of S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, Peiris has been playing golf since the age of six and hopes to become a professional.

“The BBDO Monthly Medal was a well organised tournament and it was a good experience for me, playing against the older and more experienced participants,” said Peiris.

Winner of the Division B (Handicap 10-18) Nett and Gross categories W.A.K. Fernando called the tournament “well thought out” and was elated about having played his best score thus far.

Fernando scored 65 and 75 in the Nett and Gross categories, respectively.

We are delighted that we are providing an opportunity for future professional golf players in Sri Lanka as was evidenced by the emergence of fourteen year old Prashan Peiris”, said Menon.
