The change of venue was done by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to the current renovation program at Khettarama which was recommended by the University of Moratuwa. An independent integrity assessment reported to SLC that all four main stands – Block A, B, C and D need serious renovation.

As part of the ICC World Test Championship, the England team led by Joe Root, will arrive in Sri Lanka on the 3rd of March. They will initially play a three-day full squad participation warm-up match and a four-day First-Class match in Katunayake and Colombo respectively before travelling to Galle for the first Test match which starts on the 19th of March.
