Upamalika wins Sri Lanka’s second at Asian Indoor

Quarter miler Upamalika Rathnakumari won Sri Lanka’s second medal yesterday(2nd) at the 8th Asian indoor Championship held in Teheran, Iran, when she clocked a time of 54.90 secs to take the Bronze medal in the Women’s 400m final.

Upamalika was placed second in her heat on the first day of the competition, where she clocked a time of 55.36 secs securing her place in the final. Svetlana Golendova of Kazakhstan won Gold in the event with a time of 53.28 while her teammate Elina Mikhina won Silver clocking 53.49secs.

Upamalika’s Boronze medal is the second medal won by the Sri Lankan contingent at the competition.  Nimali Liyanarachchi won the country’s first medal at the competition on the opening day, when she managed to win Bronze in the Women’s 800m final. Today(3rd) will be the final day of the three day competition. Sri Lankan Long Jumper Prasad Wimalasiri will be the only Sri Lankan Athlete taking part in the competition today with the Men’s Long jump competition set to commence at 09.30pm Sri Lankan time.
