“Wennappuwa Knights” walks away with the B division title at the Colombo District Basketball Association’s annual grading.

The B division compromised of  the least number of teams in this tournament as well as in comparison to the B division participants of previous years. “To represent in the B division either one should be promoted from C or thrown back from A division. In last years’ rounds not many in division were able to meet the standards. And being thrown back from A division is highly unlikely because they always maintain the competitiveness” explains Mr. Ajith, the Vice President of the Colombo District Basketball Association.

With only 6 teams participating in the B division, quarter finals were not an option for them. At the semifinals Moratuwa was taking on Four wings while Wennappuwa Knights was battling with Buffaloes ”A”. The first Semifinals were a clear victory to Moratuwa with 71 points against the 52 points of the Four Wings.  The second semifinal match caught the attention of the spectators till the last minute with Wennappuwa Knights and the Buffaloes “A” keeping the totals at a few point difference. In the last minute scoring a three pointer gave the green light for the Wennapuwa Knights to make it the finals.

At the consolation finals Four wings was at an easy win against the Buffalos “A” with a final score of 69 to 59 points.

The finals were between Moratuwa and the Wennappuwa Knights. Having an early start Moratuwa was lucky with many three points. Some of them were almost half courts which gave a clear disadvantage to the Knights in the first two quarters. However, the knights were able to pick up the phase gradually from the end of the first half. They changed their game plan to grab the ball early on and Moratuwa was wearing off which made them lose efficiency with the 3 pointers.

From the second quarter fans were gaining more interest since the scores were a tie with 2 point deference in between the totals. The time might have been a deciding factor in which case last few seconds should have been important, but Moratuwa was able take the lead by a couple of almost ‘Slam Dunks’. The show off almost cost two players injuries, being thrown off. By the early fourth quarter itself the victory was guaranteed for the Moratuwa blokes. Finally they were able to put together 73 points in contrast to the 63 points by the Wennappuwa Knights being the B division Champions.
