Sri Lanka women prepare for SAFF 2019

Sri Lanka National Women’s Football Team will be taking part in the 5th edition of the SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) Women’s Championship which will be held in Nepal from 12th to 22nd March 2019.

The tournament which is been held biennially did not take place in December 2018 where Sri Lanka withdrew as the host. Afterwards it was given to Nepal. In the 4 previous occasions Sri Lanka took part, their best result was being semi-finalists in 2012 and 2014.

In the last edition the team did manage to get a win by beating Bhutan 2-0. The remaining 2 matches Lankans lost to Maldives 5-2 and Nepal 1-0.

The current squad has been training for the past 5 months and included a friendly tour in December 2018 to Bahrain in preparation for the tournament.  Playing against the Bahrain National team Sri Lanka lost the first match 5-0, the second match 2-0 and the final game 2-1.

The current squad comprises of 29-players. The coaching team is headed by Thilak Alponsu and assisted by Dammika Athukorala. The goalkeeper coach is Lalith Weerasinghe. Other coaching staff includes Deepani Samarasinghe – Women’s Assistant Coach. Ganga Jayasundara – Physio and Sujith Hewage – Trainer. Hiran Rathnayake – Manager

The final 20 players will be picked by the end of the month.

Sri Lanka is slotted in Group B along with 4 times champions India and Maldives. The top 2 teams will qualify for the semi-finals from each group. Group A consists of Host Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

  • 15th March – Maldives v Sri Lanka – 3.00pm – Sahid Rangsala Stadium
  • 17th March – Sri Lanka v India – 3.00pm – Sahid Rangsala Stadium
