Sri Lanka become Men’s Overall Equipped Open Champions

Sri Lanka men’s powerlifting trio of Pradeep Kumara, Hiran Fernando and Ransilu Jayathilaka made history, becoming the Open Men’s Equipped Champions at the Asian Pacific Classic & Equipped Powerlifting Championship 2019 which is currently being held in Gold Coast Australia.

This is the first time in the history of Sri Lankan Power lifting, that the island has won an overall Championship in an international competition. Carrying forward the impressive start the Sri Lankan lady lifters provided yesterday winning 4 medals, the Sri Lankan Men’s team won 7 medals consisting of 6 Gold medals and a Silver.

2 National records for Ransilu en route to the Championship

3 Gold medals in the open category secured the Championship for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s premier powerlifter Ransilu Jayathilaka who has represented the country at over 40 international competitions was at his best in the Men’s Equipped 120Kg Open category. He won Gold in the event clearing a mammoth total of 720Kg. Ransilu en route to his Gold smashed two national records, lifting 290Kg in the squat and 300Kg in the dead lift.

Pradeep Kumara who competed in the Men’s Equipped 59Kg Open category secured Gold, clearing a total weight of 550Kg which included a Squat of 180Kg, Bench 105Kg and Deadlift 220Kg. Veteran lifter Hiran Fernando also secured a Gold medal competing in the Men’s Equipped 93Kg open event clearing a total weight of 600Kg which included a Squat of 240Kg, Bench 140Kg and deadlift 220Kg.

Veteran Rugby coach and trainer, Mothilal Jayathilaka who is the team coach on tour yet again showcased that age is just a number as he managed to win Gold in the Men’s Equipped Over 50 category clearing a total weight of 360Kg which included a Squat of 100Kg, Bench 80Kg and deadlift 180Kg.

Future looks bright as youngsters step up

Sri Lanka’s Powerlifting future seems to be in strong hands as the juniors impressed, managing to secure two Gold medals and a Silver. Nivendra Silva won Gold in the Men’s Equipped 120+Kg Sub junior category, clearing a total weight of 435Kg. His performance consisted of a Squat of 150Kg, Bench 115Kg and deadlift 170Kg. Kakolya Janmod who competed in the 105Kg weight class of the same category won Silver managing to clear a total weight of 492Kg which consist of a Squat of 180Kg, Bench 100Kg and deadlift 212Kg.

Competing in the Men’s Equipped 105Kg Junior category Vikum Perera won Gold clearing a total of 515Kg which consisted of a Squat of 180Kg, Bench 110Kg and deadlift 225Kg.

The Sri Lankan team is in high spirits with some incredible returns in the equipped category at the two opening days of the Asian Pacific Equipped and Classic Powerlifting Championship 2019. The Powerlifters have now secured 11 medals in total which include 8 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals. They will also take part in the Classic competition which will be worked out over the 15th & 16th with tomorrow being the rest day.
