The Irish skipper won the toss and decided to take the first lease of the wicket but failed to make a significant contribution with the bat as they were bundled out for just 153 runs in their first innings. The Irish opening batsman James McCollum showed some resistance with the bat top scoring with a knock of 76 runs which came off 108 balls.

The Sri Lankans were very disciplined with the ball right from the start with right arm seamer Mohomad Shiraz and left arm spinner Lasith Ambuldeniya taking 4 wickets each to demolish the Irish batting line-up. Though Sri Lanka shone with the ball, they did not get off to a good start with the bat as they lost their first 4 wickets for 46 runs in 15 overs.

However, experienced campaigner Milinda Siriwardane and in-form left hand batsman Kamindu Mendis met at the crease and built an unbeaten 139 run partnership for the fifth wicket to finish the first day’s play in favor of the hosts.
