Ranabima Warrior Supun Randeniya and sprint sensation Himasha Eashan grabbed track honours with personal best performances in the first fitness trial for the pool athletes held at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Diyagama on Saturday.

Randeniya clocked 14.22 seconds (1028 IAAF points) in the men’s 110m hurdles to beat national champion Hasith Nirmal while Esahan clocked 10.52 seconds (1034 IAAF points) as he beat a number of seniors. As this is only a few days in training after the off season most of them were not at their best indicating that Eashan and Randeniya have room for improvement in coming months.

Though fitness test was compulsory for the junior and senior pool athletes there were less than expected at the championship.

There was panic and excitement in the evening when two sprinters Jude Lowe and Sonali Gamage collided during warming up at the warm up track and both injured their noses badly. They were rushed to hospital by ambulance.

The next national trials will be held in May after the junior nationals.
