Southern Province booked their spot in the finals of the SLC Super U19 Provincial tournament today after beating North Western by 42 runs according to dukcworth and Lewis method.
Southern Province skipper Dhannajaya Lakshan won the toss and elected to bat first. Skipper opened the batting and laid the foundation with a well composed 38 runs but the rest of the top order failed to contribute.
However, it was Ravin Yasas and Ravishka Wikesiri who rescued Southern Province after the early losses. Ravin scored a patient 42 while Ravishka scored a blistering 78 with 6 sixes and 3 fours. With the ball for North Western, Randeera Ranasinghe bagged 3 for 46. They managed to reach 260 before been bowled out in the last over.
In reply, North Western had a horrific start by losing 3 wickets for just 48 runs in 14 overs. Skipper Wanitha Wanninayake and Dulaj Ranasinghe consolidated for North Western with a 71 runs stand for the 4th wicket. Wanitha lost his wicket for 32 runs through an unfortunate run out. Dulaj too departed shortly afterwards which put them in a tight spot at 5 for 125.
The chase become much harder after those quick wickets but it was Nipun Dhananjaya who showed grit in his short stay at the crease. His knock of 45 came off just 39 balls. After his departure they fell apart and when bad light stopped play they were 207 for 9, 44 runs short according to the duckworth and lewis method.
The strong Western Province South team will take on the formidable Southern Province outfit in the Final of the SLC Super U19 Provincial Limited Over Tournament 2017 on 7th May at R. Premadasa International Stadium.
