Right-handed batsman Santhush Gunathilake stroked a magnificent century as St. Peter’s College dominated the opening day against St. Benedict’s College in their Singer-Cup traditional encounter which started today in Kotahena.

Skipper Lakshina Rodrigo won the toss and opted bat first as they posted a formidable 302 in 68 overs. Santhush Gunathilake made a blistering century and he was ably supported by Lakshina Rodrigo and Anishka Perera with useful half-tons. In reply the lads from Kotahena were struggling at 43 for 3 wickets. Off- spinner Chathura Obeysekara captured 3 crucial wickets to put the visitors in control on day one.

St. Anthony’s College, Kandy dominated the opening day against St. Joseph’s College, Colombo in a traditional encounter which began today in Kandy. The hosts got bundled out for 176 thanks to a terrific bowling spell from skipper Harin Cooray. In reply the visitors were struggling at 127 for 9 wickets. Inform Dineth Madurawela made a solid half-ton, but it was Virajitha Jayasinghe and Sandaruwan Dharmaratne who did major damage to the visiting batting line up as they grabbed four wickets apiece.

Cambrians took major honours in the opening day against Wesley College in a group B game which started today in Moratuwa. Being asked to bat first the visitors got knocked out for a paltry 165 as left-arm spinner Thilan Nimesh grabbed 5 scalps for the home team. In reply Sanoj Dharshika made an unbeaten 51 for the  Cambrians as they the ended the day on 146 for 6 wickets.

Anjana Aroshana grabbed 6 wickets in the first innings while Hachith Thimal was superb with the ball in the second innings with a 6 wicket haul to give the lads from Gampaha a comprehensive outright win.
