The game, which was a close encounter saw a empathic finish when the visitors Thurstan clinched their first win of the season, defeating Sylvester’s 16-14.

Although there was tension on the ground following the full-time result, there have been no incidents of violence reported.

“After the full-time whistle, the water carrier of the home side had verbally abused the referee but with the high security and the police personnel deployed there were no reported incidents” added Jayasinghe exclusively to ThePapare.com.

“The referee who was assigned was Sarath Madugalle and after speaking to him, I can assure you that no Sylvester’s or Thurstan player assaulted the referee on the ground”

ThePapare.com contacted the match commissioner who was assigned for the game to inquire on the situation.

“There was a bit of disagreement from the home team fans but with the huge number of policemen on the ground there were no reported incidents”, W. D. O. Wijewansa added, reiterating Jayasinghe’s comment.

ThePapare.com contacted the Assistant Coach of Thurstan College Sasanka Ariyaratne regarding the incident and he added the following,

“After the full-time whistle, the home team players were having a chat with the referee and fans came on to the ground. They assaulted two of my players and then I, myself and the team were escorted out of the ground safely by the Police”
