We have been let down several times – Aravinda

Former great Aravinda de Silva on Saturday joined his colleagues in turning down an offer by Sports Minister Faizer Musthapha to come forward as as a consultant to help Sri Lanka Cricket. De Silva echoed the same sentiments as other former greats – Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama and Mahela Jayawardene – and claimed that there has been little progress despite several consultations with the players in the past.

“The past players have been called up several times to help but very little progress has been made,” de Silva told Sunday Island in response to a query whether he would join SLC.

“It is not rocket science as to how we could fix things. We have given proposal after proposal for the last so many years. We feel that there is an issue with implementing these recommendations for some reason. If the recommendations are not implemented there is a problem in the system,” de Silva added.

“Some people have been using players and at times they have been creating rifts between players. It is time that the Minister or anyone else looked at leaving cricketers out and looking at something outside the box.”

“What we need to have is a proper system in place – a proper transparent system. There has to be accountability. People need to be politically unbiased. That has been the biggest problem. We have tried our best but nothing has worked out and what’s the point in us coming forward again.”
