The leading fertilizer brand AgStar, joins hands with the Darwela Maskeliya Cricket Club (DRCC) in organizing the Planter fraternity’s much awaited event of the year, the ‘18th Annual Planters Rugby Sevens’. This annual gala rugby event is scheduled to be held on the 7th of April at the DMCC’s home venue in Hatton.

The collaboration of AgStar was announced at a media conference held yesterday, in which the management of both parties attended. Mr. Athula Gunarathna the Director of Marketing, Mr. Dhanushka De Zoysa the Asst. General Manager (corporate) and Mr. Amila Rathnayake the Sales Manager (corporate) represented AgStar PLC while Mr. R. M. Samarakoon the Secretary of DMCC (Chief Organizer of the Tournament) and Mr. Kelum Samaratunge the Treasurer of DMCC were present.

Commenting on the occasion Mr. Athula Gunarathna stated, “At AgStar, our mission is to drive growth in agriculture by providing superior quality products and services. We have closely associated with the Plantation sector and have been able to provide them with the best. Surely this partnership implies the strong bond we have with the plantation sector.”

DMCC Secretary, Mr. R. M. Samarakoon went onto to emphasize on the importance of this tournament and also invite the school boy Rugby players to join the Plantation industry. “This is one of the leading 7’s tournament’s in Sri Lanka. Likewise, it is a clear beacon to the rugby loving school boys that plantation is an industry where one can continue to play rugby while engaging in a prestigious profession.”

This year 12 teams will take part in the tournament.

Talawakelle Tea Estate PLC, Maskeliya Planatation PLC, Bogawanthalawa Tea Estate PLC, Agalawatte & Pussellawa Plantations Ltd (combined team), Elpitiya Plantations PLC, Hapugasthenne & Udapussallawa Plantations PLC (combined team), Hatton Plantations PLC, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC, Malwatte Plantations PLC
Mathurata Plantations Ltd, Namununkulu & Kegalle Plantations (combined team), and the Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation will compromise the 12 teams.

On the day of the tournament, the organisers together with the main sponsors AgStar, have planned several fun and entertaining items which will light up the atmosphere and keep the supporters happy. And as most of these teams are comprised of well-known former school boys and Club Rugby players who have joined the planting profession, quality rugby is expected.
