56th Junior Nationals; Second record for Peterite Tharanga

The third and the penultimate day of the 56th Junior National Athletic competition concluded today (25th) at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The four-day event is conducted under 4 age groups in Under 16,18, 20 and 23.

In the Under 16 Boy’s Javelin event, young Peterite Rumesh Tharanga threw a brilliant distance of 65.26m to lay claim to the meet record of the event. He erased the previous record of 62.27 by I. A. Paranagama of Nalanda College which was established in 2001. Tharanga is having a fabulous meet as he also managed to win the Under 16 Boy’s Discus throw with a meet record with a throw of 55.34m. The Petrite is turning out to be an athlete to watch out for in the future. He was ahead of the rest of the competition with S Mithunraj of Hartley College Jaffna who was placed second only managing a best throw of 54.33m while Kavishka Maduranaga, another Petrite was placed 3rd with a distance of 53.59m.

Two meet records tumble in the 400m heats

Two 400m meet records were broken today in the heats which promises a thrilling competition tomorrow in the finals. In the Girl’s Under 20 400m heats Shyamali Kumarasinghe of A Ratnayake College won the second heat with a brilliant run clocking 55.94secs, Shaymali’s run bettered the previous record of 56.08secs by Shanika Kumari Ratnayake of St. Joseph’s BV Kegalle. Shyamali who will have her eyes on the junior South Asian athletic championship which is a week away will look to better the record in tomorrow’s final.

D M Bogoda of Kurunegala DAA ran 48.55secs in the Boy’s Under 18 final taking the meet record in the event. Bogoda bettered Sri Lanka junior athlete, Benedictine, Ravishka Indrajith’s time of 48.87secs established in last year’s competition.

The 400m and the 100m finals for all the age groups will be held tomorrow (26th) from 10.30am onwards and is sure to provide thrilling match ups. Two meet records have already been established in the 400m heats while the 100m finals will have the crowd on their feet.
