Dialog Axiata, along with the collaboration of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Association organised for the 11th consecutive time, the ‘2016 Dialog President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament’, which took place on the 23rd of July, at the Bingiriya stadium, Kurunegala.
This island wide tournament saw the participation of 60000 players, along with the participation of some 300+ Grama Sewas, which ranged from female and male participants aged 22 or above divided into 4 separate groups.
The first round that took place on the 24th of July, saw the participation of 25 districts, where each district possessed 4 groups, which eventually led to the creation of 100 groups in the country that went through to the All Island tournament that went on with proceedings in the months of September and October.
The round in Gampaha district saw the emergence of the male team from Kataana, United Sports Club beating Randavaana Golden Birds Sports Club 3:0 in the 22 and over open category. It was the same result in the women’s round of matches, ironically with the same teams.
The under 22 age group also saw some intense action as Seeduwa Divisamara Sports Club beating Siyanaa Tharu Sports Club 3:0. Furthermore, the female category saw victory in the hands of Kirindiwali Sangamitta Sports Slub and loss in the hands of Randavaana Golden Birds Sports Club.
In the Galle district, Karandeniya Sports Club showed their dominance by emerging victorious in the over 22 (open) male and female matches defeating Benthota Sagara Sports Club and Thotagamuwa Sports Club respectively, by 2:0 in both matches.
Furthermore, Karandeniya Sports Club emerged victorious once again in the under22 age group by defeating Habaraaduwa Shining Stars Sports Club 2:0. It was a different story in the female category as Batapola Deepthi Sports Club won against Karandeniya Maha Vidyalaya with a score line of 2:0.
The Youth Services Sports Club won their final bout in the Colombo district, as they defeated Mirihana United Sports Club by 3:1 in the males over 22 open age category. The females over 22 open category saw Kapila Sports Club winning against the female team of the Youth Services.
The under 22 age group of the male category saw the victory of Paligedera Sports Club over Habarakada Sports Club with a score line of 3:2. It was Kapila Sports Club that edged over Thallahena Borulugoda Sports Club in the female category by winning 3:2.
Jaffna district’s round of matches saw the Avarangal Hindu Youth Sports Club emerge victorious by winning 3:1 against Avarangal Central Sports Club in the males over 22 open age category. The women’s round of the same age group saw Kankasanthure United Sports Club win over Wasavilan Sports Club with a comfortable 3:0 win.
The males over 22 open age group saw Ugana Pragathi Sports Club defeat Busthialla Aruna Sports Club in a rather close bout that ended 3:2 in favour of the former, in Ampara district.
The women’s round of matches saw Busthialla Sports Club play Black Lines Sports Club in a 3:1 score line which was in favour of Busthialla.
The men’s under22 round of matches saw Malwattha Sigiri Sports Club win over Tissapura Super Kings Sports Club with a score line of 3:2. However, Tissapura Super Kings Sports Club emerged victorious in the female category as they defeated Ugana Rohitha Sports Club.
The penultimate round of matches would be played on the 5th, 6thand 7th of this month at the Anuradhapura Thambuththegama Mahaweli stadium. The finals would then be played on the 7th of December at the Maharagama Youth Services indoor stadium.
