The Josephian –  Thomian Regatta will be an annual fixture in the rowing calendar and is tipped to rival in prestige and popularity the Royal- Thomian regatta.  The event promises to attract the fans and oarsmen of the rowing community of the country at the prestigious Colombo Rowing Club.

Rowing as a sport has grown rapidly in popularity in Sri Lanka since the introduction of the sport to the country by the British.  Schools rowing emerged in the country for the first time in the 1950s and both St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and St. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia have invested significantly in providing aspiring oarsmen with the equipment and opportunities needed to excel in the sport.
