Zahira unmatched at soccer Sevens

Zahira College Maradana retained the ‘Zahira Super 16 Soccer Sevens’ crown once again when they beat Al Aqsa of Kinniya by a solitary goal to nil in the final played at Maradana yesterday.

The winning goal was scored by M.R.M. Faroodh in the first half.

The winning team comprised of A.J.M. Nusri (captain), M.R. Liyafdeen (gk), M.I.M. Humid, Ashiq Yoosuf, Aadhil Ahamed, M.F.M. Faroodh, M. Shafir, Abdur Rahuman, Ijaz Ishan and M. Azhar.

Zahira players also carried away a couple of main awards such as man of the final that went to M. Humid and Man of the Series that went to M. Faroodh while the best goal keeper was Liyafdeen also of Zahira.

Zahira beat Holy Cross and Al Aqsa beat Hindu Manipai in the two semi-finals.

The Plate event was won by Zahira College Mawanella who beat St. Joseph’s 2-1 on the penalty tie breaker.

Zahira Mawanella beat Isipathana and St. Joseph’s beat Hindu College Colombo in the two semi-final matches.

Wesley College took the Shield when they beat D.S. Senanayake 2-0 in the final that was well controlled by the winners.

Wesley beat S. Thomas’ and DS Senayake beat St. Mary’s Kegalle in the two semi-finals.

Maris Stella beat St. Benedict’s 2-1 in the Bowl final after the game went into a penalty shootout.

Maris Stella beat Ananda and St. Benedict’s beat De Mazenod in the two semi-finals.

The tournament was witnessed by a large gathering of soccer fans and finished in semi-darkness.
