Yupun Abeykoon, began his 2023 season with a comfortable win, claiming Gold in the Men’s 200m at the Firenze Sprint Festival 2023 in Italy.
He clocked an impressive 20.60s finish, with Italians Marco Ricci and Francesco Libera finishing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively with times of 20.88s and 21.08s.
Abeykoon, whose pet event is the 100m, participated in several 200m events last year as well, setting a new National Record of 20.37s at the Castiglione International Meeting in Italy.
The sprinter’s season is expected to be a busy one, with both the World Athletics Championships and Asian Games coming up later this year, where he will be vying for medals, particularly in the 100m event.
