Root warms up with a century – Nishan Peiris picks three

England tour of Sri Lanka 2018 – 1st 2-Day Warm-up – Day 2 Report

The 1st Warm-up match between the visiting England team and the Sri Lanka Board XI ended in a tame draw today at the NCC Grounds in Colombo as England scored 365/7 in reply to the hosts 392/9.

The Sri Lanka Board XI batted the whole of day 1 and compiled a massive score of 392. Taking their chance of batting today, the tourists warmed up very well for the upcoming Test series.

Sri Lanka Board XI declared their first innings for a massive 392/9 at stumps..

Keaton Jennings opened the batting for England with new opening partner, left-handed batsman Rory Burns. The new partners were separated in the 14th over of the inning by Lankan pacer Shehan Madushanka who dismissed Jennings for 13 runs when England were on 38.

All-rounder Joe Denly batting at 3 together with Burns added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket before Sadeera Samarawickrama ran out Burns for 47 runs. Following Burns, Denly too was sent back to the dressing room as Lahiru Kumara castled him up for 25.

England’s best batting duo in the current squad, Captain Joe Root and all-rounder Ben Stokes then were paired up in the middle before Stokes took a heavy blow on his elbow attempting a pull off a Lahiru Kumara delivery.

Though he went off the field after the blow, he returned to resume his inning after treatment. English vice-captain Jos Buttler who partnered with Root after Stokes’ exit scored 44 runs off 55 deliveries before being off-spinner Nishan Peiris’ first victim.

Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka while fielding at short leg for Nishan Peiris’ bowling was hit on his head by a Jos Buttler pull, which resulted in him being hospitalized. Luckily he is out of danger according to reliable sources.

t on the other end kept scoring runs freely as he reached a much needed century to kick-start the red ball leg of the tour. Root retired once he reached his 117-ball century which included 13 boundaries.

Genuine all-rounders Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali then warmed up themselves for the Test series with some useful runs. Stokes and Ali scored 31 and 60 runs respectively before both of them fell prey for off spinner Nishan Peiris who ended up with figures of 3/108.

Top order batsman Olly Pope and back-up wicket keeper batsman Ben Foakes remained unbeaten on 18 and 16 as the match ended in a tame draw.
