Wesley sees first win through Kannangara

The Double Blue brigade beat neighbor’s Kannangara Vidyala by 61 points to nil to establish the first win for the season. Winger Chamika Kusal grabbed 5 tries and 3 conversions. Wesley 61 (T11 C3) – Kannagara 00.

Being the bottom 2 teams on the table, Wesley and Kannangara prepared themselves to hope for a win to survive in the top division. Couple of changes could be seen in both sides. Favourites of the game Wesley, had the total control of ball possession. In the meantime Kannangara did not make use of the chances they got.

Chamika Kusal made the opening try for Wesley in the first 10 minutes of the game. Scrumhalf Taariq Jurangpathy released the ball from the scrum which ended up with Chamika’s try.

Couple of minutes later Pasindu passes the ball to fly half Omar Kuthubdeen from the ruck. Yet again the line works out well without any obstacle. Chamika scored an unconverted try. Wesley leads the game 10-00.

Being in the Kannangara territory for a while was fortunate for Wesley as they grab another try. Boys in red failed to clear the ball from the scrum and a ruck was formed on the try line. Prop Forward Shamil Amit jumps on to a loose ball to score his first try. Chamika added the 2 points.

Chamika made his way towards the 22 meter terrain from the half line. No support was there for him as his offload was not collected by anyone. Prop forward Zayan collects the loose ball before his opponents did. Wesley forwards rushed down immediately to push forward Zayan. Shamil nabs the ball from the maul and lands on the try line. Chamika failed to convert. Wesley 22- 00 Kannangara.

Kannangra’s kick off well collected by second row Yohan Perera who crashed down with an astounding 30 meter run and offloads to Mithila Perera who passed a couple of defenders easily even though he got tackled by fullback S. Amarathunga. Number 08 Pasindu steals the ball from the ruck even before the opponents noticed he fled to make a try.

Just before the short whistle Chamika sees a clear space and dashes through the space to the try line while knocking down 2 opponents with his amazing handoff. Wesley had 32 points and Kannagara had none during the breather.

With the beginning of the second half Kannangara gets an easy chance of adding points to the score board.  Kicker M.V. Peiris could not put over the 30 meter penalty kick. Wesley bouncing back to the other side of the field easily with Avishka’s kick. S. Amarathunga collected the ball and tried to get away from the defense line but couldn’t make it. Pasindu snatched the ball from the opponent and knocked a defender to clear himself on course to the try line. He off-loaded to Shamil who touched down for the 7th try which was converted by Chamika.

Yet another amazing run from the kick off by Chamika caused an unconverted try, his handoff’s clearing his obstacles easily. A few minutes later Welsey forwards pushing at the  try line saw a loose ball collected by substitute fly half Murshid who flicked to  Avishka who ran in between the defenders to slam the ball for a try. Chamika added the rest. Wesley 59-00 Kannangara.

Skipper Omar dashed through and helps the line to work out the ball till the corner. Murshids long pass gathered by the winger saw Chamika scoring on the corner flag with a speedy run. Omar’s conversion hit the bar. Later on Avishka scored the final try by stealing the ball from a ruck to make the score 61-00. At the latter part of the game Kannagara were on the  Welsey territory trying their level best to score a single try. But couldn’t make it because of the strong defense line.
