The Elle Competition of the 49th National Sports Festival ended successfully by giving top honours to Wayamba (North Western) Province, while the Sabaragamuwa ladies came up with a groundbreaking victory to demolish the Wayamba outfit.
The competition was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with the collaboration of the Department of Sports Development under the patronage of veteran coach Madhura Perera and was held at the Galle District Sports Training Centre & Sports Complex, Makurugoda, Baddegama, recently.
After an action-packed tournament, the Wayamba men stamped their class and defended their title for yet another year with a strong attack across the field, which was followed by an exceptional fielding effort. After a spirited performance throughout the tournament, the lads from Western Province clinched the silver, while the Southern brigade clinched the bronze by beating the Sabaragamuwa outfit.

In the women’s segment, the spirited ladies from Sabaragamuwa came up with a solid performance to outclass the defending champions from Wayamba at the finals. While Wayamba ladies fell for a silver this time, Western Province ladies secured the bronze medal.
After a series of powerful strokes, S. P. H. Sewwandi, who was the iron lady behind the revolutionary victory of Sabaragamuwa, was adjudged as the best women’s player. Further, the all-round brilliance displayed throughout the tournament by A. M. Niranga Chamod Attanayake from Wayamba emerged as the best men’s player of the event. Niranga came to the Elle field from Sandalankawa, and he excelled in the game, representing the renowned Thotalanga Aruna and St Jude’s, Mahabage clubs.
