The weightlifting competition of the 49th National Sports Festival concluded successfully at the Indoor Complex of the Sports Development Department with the participation of 265 weightlifters. The North Western Province (Wayamba) team won the overall championship while they also managed to win the men’s and women’s championships, respectively.
The tournament saw competitions from 8 weight classes in both men’s and women’s segments. The Wayamba team stamped a total dominance on the event by claiming 9 gold and 2 silver medals, even though the medal aggregate of all the other provinces wasn’t able to surpass them. The weightlifters from the Western Province emerged as the 1st runners-up, while they were closely followed by the North Central Province, who clinched the overall 2nd runners-up position.
After displaying remarkable skill, strength, and sportsmanship, Y. D. I. Kumara of North Western Province and B. D. Hansani Gomas of Western Province emerged as the best male and female weightlifters of the competition.
