Vijayabahu Motocross, the motor racing competition organised by the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment along with Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association will be held on 17th June 2018 for the 16th consecutive year at Boyagane, Kurunegala.

The Vijayabahu Motocross was first organised back in the year 2000 with the hope and intention of popularising and uplifting Motorsports in the Nation, while also raising funds for the welfare of the members of the Regiment and of the families of heroes who laid down their lives or became differently abled fighting for our Nation.

Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, who was on the panel, in a statement said, that they treat this event like an international event. He went on to talk about the opportunities this event brings as he said, “We take this event to the rural areas to give the opportunity to people to show off their riding talents and skills in ways they never get the opportunity to otherwise. We are giving people the opportunity to take part and have fun in the Motocross sport.”

Organiser of the Vijayaba Motorcross, Brigadier Chandana Gunawardena stated, “There are about 100 participants involved in the motorcycle races which also include a few foreign competitors. This is one of the most picturesque but toughest race tracks in Sri Lanka. This race track was built so that all spectators can have a full view of it from whichever angle.”

In a statement provided by the organisers they state, ‘We proudly announce that many business leaders including TVS Lanka, Mas Holdings, ESER Marketing, Sri Lanka Insurance, Hutch, Stafford Motors (Honda Company), Elephant House, CEAT Kelani International Tire Company, Ninehearts and Sri Lanka Rupavahini/Channel Eye have joined hands with us by providing sponsorship for  Vijayabahu Motocross 2018.

TVS Motor Company, the main Sponsors for the 2018 edition gave a statement at the press conference saying, “We believe we can develop riders from Sri Lanka to an international level through big events like this.”

Funds raised by previous Motorcross editions were said to be utilised in pious ventures such as construction of houses for the members of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, awarding scholarships and donation of computers to the children of the members of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment to excel in their studies. The Regiment has also built a gymnasium and a playground to develop the sports ability of officers and other ranked officials. Some of the schools are also utilising these facilities.

The organising committee happily announced that the funds raised by the 16th Vijayabahu Motocross will once again be utilized for welfare and social development activities.
