Royal, Vidyarathna and Lumbini clinch the titles

Blue, Gold and Blue Volleyball Championship concluded…

Hosts Royal College had to settle with three runners-up titles in the U20, U18 & U16 age categories.

The 12th Blue, Gold & Blue Western Province Invitation Schools’ Volleyball Championship organized by the Royal College Volleyball Advisory and Management Committee (RCVAMC) under the patronage of the Royal College Union worked off on the 09th and 10th of June at the Royal College Sports Complex.

The tournament was conducted under four age groups for boys – U 14, U16, U18 & U20 and U20 for the girls.

U20 Boys Final

Vidyarathna University College, Horana dethroned the reigning champions Royal College, Colombo 3-0 (25-18, 25-20 & 25-21).

The boys from Vidyarathna made it look easy in the first set, as their dominant display of volleyball paved the way to claim it by 25-18.

But, the Royalists coming back to their rhythm in the second set dismantled the opposition by taking an early lead of 06-10. However, the Vidyarathna College regained their form midway through the set as they went onto equalize the opposition at the 20-point mark.

From their onwards it was all Vidyarathna as they scored 5 consecutive points to win the second set by 25-20 gaining a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Continuing the form of the second set, Vidyarathna College got off to a good start; leading by 13-07 and it looked like as if they would go onto win the match quite comprehensively. However, it was the Royalists this time that caught up and equalized the opposition again at the 20-point mark.

And then again it was almost a repeat of the second set which saw Vidyarathna cruising off to the finishing line with another 05 points to their points tally while Royal managed only one.

An impressive attacking display blended with a good defense and teamwork by the lads from Horana, against a lackluster Royal performance, ensured them the U20 championship.

U20 Girls Final

The defending champions, Lumbini Maha Vidyalaya triumphed over Agamathi Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura, in what was a repeat of the final from the last year.

It was quite a cakewalk for the girls from Lumbini Maha Vidyalaya, as they dominated the game from the very onset to clinch the title in two straight sets. The scores were recorded as 25-18 and 25-13.

U18 Boys Final

De Mazenod College, Kandana defeated Royal College, Colombo in the finals by 2-0 (26-24, 25-23) after a hotly contested battle to grab the U18 Boys championship.

The first set of the match looked much more competitive as both the teams went point for point. But it was the boys from Kandana who got the crucial break to win it 26-24.
