Under-18 Asia Cup Hockey: Sri Lankan boys and girls have a tough time

The Sri Lankan girls’ and boys’ outfits failed to make any progress beyond the preliminary round games of the Under-18 Asia Cup 2025, currently taking place at the Dazhou National Hockey Training Centre in China.

Under-18 Girls’ Tournament

In the girls’ competition, Sri Lanka was placed in Group B alongside China, Kazakhstan, and Chinese Taipei. Group A consisted of Japan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and Hong Kong China.

The Sri Lankan lasses began their campaign with a heavy defeat to Asia’s top-ranked and the world’s 4th-ranked nation, China, with a scoreline of 13–0. In the following fixtures, the Lankan girls showed notable improvement and fighting spirit. Despite their tactical and technical elevation, they suffered back-to-back defeats to Chinese Taipei (0–3) and Kazakhstan (0–2).

As a result, the Sri Lankan team was eliminated from the cup segment and will now compete in the 5th–8th placement bracket.

Under-18 Boys’ Tournament

In the boys’ segment, Sri Lanka was drawn into Group A alongside China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong China. Group B featured Japan, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Chinese Taipei.

Sri Lanka’s opening fixture saw them face a formidable Chinese team, and the young Lions were unable to withstand the intense pressure, suffering a 9–0 loss. In their second encounter, Sri Lanka took on arch-rivals Bangladesh, but the disciplined and clinical Tigers dominated throughout, posting a resounding 13–0 victory.

In the third game, Sri Lanka met another hockey powerhouse in the form of Pakistan. Their misfortunes continued as Pakistan handed them a 9–0 defeat.

In their final preliminary round match, Sri Lanka faced Hong Kong China. With both teams having suffered three consecutive defeats, the game became a fierce contest for pride and a consolation win. The first two quarters saw both sides creating chances but failing to convert.

In the third quarter, Sri Lanka launched an attack from the right corner and broke into the scoring circle. Mohammed Arkan broke the deadlock by scoring the opening goal from a rebound off the goalkeeper. A minute into the final quarter, Ragawan Kogul added a second goal for Sri Lanka following a successful penalty corner.

Sri Lanka held on to their 2–0 lead to secure fourth place in the group. While this win wasn’t enough to book a spot in the cup semifinals, the Lankan lads will now face Indonesia in the 7th place decider.
