The decision to turndown division A rugby seemed to be paying off as Kingswood College, still unbeaten and cruising at the top of the Segment IIB points table, seek to round off a successful season as they take on the down cast from Segment A.

Blast from the past

Kingswood College Kandy is one of the oldest Rugby playing schools and has a proud history of over 125 years in the oval ball game. With the College being established in 1891, L.E Blaze introduced the oval ball game to the pearl of the Indian Ocean through Kingswood.

This prestigious school has produced star players of the likes of Nalaka Weerakkodi, Fazil Marija and the Weeraratne brothers. Having won promotion in 2003 from B division, Kingswood went on to win the knockout and the seven’s championships that year. Success continued in the year to follow as they were crowned triple championship in 2004 and 2005.

Last Season

2016 was a season to forget for the lads from the Randle Hills school as their horror display meant they had to settle to play alongside division 2 teams in 2017.

This Season

Kingswood College received a late call up to compete in Division A but opted out of competing with the big boys as time was limited for them to prepare.

The decision paid dividends as they managed to cap off round one with 5 wins remaining unbeaten. Kingswood have passed the 50 point mark on three occasions only failing against Ananda College. St. John’s College did not play the game, handing Kingswood a win by default.

KCK 76 – SSCK 12
KCK 39 – Ananda 18
KCK 53 – Maliyadewa 08
KCK 50 – Vidyartha 13

Players to watch out for

Captain, Heshan Janson will undoubtedly be the lynchpin connecting the forward pack to the backline, playing at scrum half. He has been showing leadership throughout and will seek to improve his team’s chances.

Lakshitha Ranaweera standing at flyhalf has been controlling the team and will aim to continue his efforts.

Thanks to Weligampala at number 8 and his fellow forward pack providing front football, both the scrumhalf and flyhalf have been able control the Kingswood attack and notch up points.

Coaching Staff

Dinesh Gamage will be at the helm of Kingswood rugby this season while Indunil Wickramasinghe will be in charge of the training aspect of the team.

Final Say

Having had an excellent first round, Kingwood head in as favourites as they fight out against the Division A dropouts in their bid to win the plate championship.
