Four 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (16th January) at several venues across the island.

Naren Muralidaran, son of Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralidaran who plays for St. Joseph’s College, stole the limelight with a brilliant century against Ananda College in their traditional encounter which commenced today at Darley Road.

Having won the toss, the hosts chose to bat first and posted 376/5 in 70 overs before declaring their innings. Muralidaran was the top scorer for the Joes as he made an unbeaten 131 runs off 171 balls, including 16 fours and a six.

Maliyadeva College ended the day one of their Tier ‘A’ 2-day encounter against St. Anthony’s College on a commanding position.

Having won the toss, the hosts decided to bat first and posted a solid score – 321/6 on the board at stumps on day one.

Maliyadeva opening batter Pasindu Menaka caught the attention of everyone who attended to witness the game, by scoring a brilliant century. He dominated the visitors’ bowling attack, scoring 155 runs off 219 balls with 18 fours and a six.

Richmond College took the upper hand on day 1 against St. Thomas College in their traditional encounter, which commenced today at Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara.

The Thomians won the toss and opted to bat first, but things did not go as planned as they were bundled out for just 112 runs for their first innings. Sri Lanka U19 capped seamer Malsha Tharupathi was the pick of the bowlers for the boys from Galle, as he picked up 3 wickets for 43 runs.

In reply, the Richmondites posted 83/3 at the close of play one day one.
