Pakistan trounce Sri Lanka to secure 5th place in U19 World Cup

ICC U19 World Cup 2022

Pakistan U19s beat Sri Lanka U19s by 238 runs in the 5th place playoff of ICC U19 World Cup today (03rd February).

Having won the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dunith Wellalage opted to bowl first after making two changes to their playing XI. The middle order batter Pawan Pathiraja has been brought into the side replacing Sakuna Liyanage while the speedster Matheesha Pathirana came into the side replacing the spinner Wanuja Sahan.

Sri Lanka U19 (Playing XI): Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Sadisha Rajapaksa, Pawan Pathiraja, Shevon Daniel, Dunith Wellalage (c), Raveen de Silva, Ranuda Somarathne, Anjala Bandara (w), Vinuja Ranpul, Matheesha Pathirana, Treveen Mathew

Pakistan U19 (Playing XI): Muhammad Shehzad, Haseebullah Khan (w), Irfan Khan, Abdul Faseeh, Qasim Akram (c), Abbas Ali, Ahmed Khan, Maaz Sadaqat, Mehran Mumtaz, Zeeshan Zameer, Awais Ali

Pakistan got off to an excellent start as the opening pair Muhammad Shehzad and Haseebullah Khan built a massive 134-run partnership for the first wicket. Pakistan batters continued to demolish Sri Lankan bowling as another massive partnership was built by Khan and number three batter Qasim Akram for the 2nd wicket.

The duo added 229 runs off 153 balls for the second wicket where both the batters managed to score centuries. Khan top scored with 136 runs off 151 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes while Akram made unbeaten 135 runs off 80 balls with 13 fours and 6 sixes.

Sri Lankan bowlers were thrashed all over the park as Pakistan finished the allotted 50 overs with a massive score of 365.

It was disastrous start with the bat for Sri Lanka in the run-chase as they lost half of their side for just 41 runs inside first 11 overs. The two left hand batters Dunith Wellalage (40) and Vinuja Ranpul (53*) showed some resistance with the bat in the later part of the innings but it wasn’t enough for the islanders as they suffered a massive 238-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan.

With this defeat, Sri Lanka end the U19 World Cup campaign on a disappointing note finishing 6th place whereas the victorious Pakistan secured the 5th place of the tournament.
