St.Sylvester’s College, Kandy recorded a comprehensive 1st innings victory against Central College, Anuradhapura yesterday. This was the first match for both teams for the season. The game was held at the Asgiriya Police Grounds.
The toss was won by the visitors and they invited St.Sylvester’s College to bat first. Accordingly, they were able to put up a defendable score of 222 all out in 56.2 overs. Nimsara Attaragalla who was just a run short of his half century was unfortunately stumped. Muditha Heshan scored 46 runs for the Vesters. Shanuka Kelum and Prabath Buddhika grabbed 3 wickets each for 32 and 52 runs respectively.In reply to the 222 made by the home team, Central College, Anuradhapura scored 130 for 8 wickets in the first day of the match.
After resuming the overnight score, only 9 runs more were added to the scoreboard displaying a final total of 139 runs for the 1st innings. Shanuka Kelum played an aggressive knock of 65 with nine fours and three sixes and was not out till the end. Nimsara Attaragalla bagged 3 wickets for 20 runs while 2 wickets each were shared between Thenuka Liyanage and Shivakumar Tyron.
Making the visiting team trail by an overall score of 265 (1st inn. Lead- 83) for their win, St.Sylvester’s added another 181 runs for 8 wickets before declaring their second innings. Both Thenuka Liyanage and Udara Yatawathura scored forties. Sahan Devipahala along with Ravintha Ilangasinghe took 3 wickets each. In pursuit of 265 runs for the victory, when the score was displayed as 25 for 4 wickets for Central College, Anuradhapura, the heavy rains obstructed the play and the match was paused. However before the deterioration of the light, the match was resumed and a final score of 32 runs in 17.4 overs was put up on the board. At this stage Central College, Anuradhapura was 233 runs behind and the match concluded giving the home team a comprehensive 1st innings win by 83 runs.
